Try DIY Tuesday (Friday Edition): Homemade EO Gifts!

Do you need some stocking stuffer ideas? Do you need something for the office gift exchange? How about that person that has EVERYTHING? Try these fun and easy DIY gifts made with YL Essential Oils.

Ugh, who has time to make gifts, you say? Well, recently I hosted a holiday themed Make & Bake & Take party at my house along with two ladies from our local YL team. Each guest that came made three gifts plus watched a pumpkin bread demo using oils, as well as drank festive drinks and ate snacks, all in about an hour and a half! Of course, if you make these gifts yourself it will not take that long, but you will have just as much fun! I will post one DIY per day, so you can try one at a time! Here we go!

1.Chocolate Jar Cake Infused with Young Living Orange Essential Oil

*A few notes- this cake can be made in a coffee mug if you just want a quick dessert for one. I put it in a jar for the ease of gift giving because of the nice lid, but if you can’t find the right size jar, you could just as easily mix all the dry ingredients together, pour in a Ziploc bag, and nestle into a cute coffee mug. Also, you might think that it looks kind of funny with the jar only 1/2 full of ingredients. I agree, and the ingredients will mix together if the jar gets jostled around. But, this much space needs to be left in the jar that is being used to “bake” your cake in because once you mix in the wet ingredients and cook, the cake will rise and expand (and explode all over your microwave if there isn’t enough space!).

This gift is so easy to assemble and looks pretty neat, too. All you have to do is layer the ingredients, cut a pretty piece of paper to put on the top of the lid, and tie the instructions on with a nice ribbon. Done! Here are the directions:

You will need:

1- 12-oz jar or mug (I used a 12-oz size “Jelly Jar” Mason jar found on the Walmart website)

5 tablespoons sugar

3-4 drops Young Living Orange Essential Oil (You could also use  1-2 drops YL Peppermint Essential Oil instead)

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

1/4 cup flour

dash of salt

1 tablespoon semi-sweet or white chocolate chips

Instructions:

Mix sugar and Essential Oil in the bottom of the jar. Mix until the sugar has sucked up all the oil and no clumps remain. Layer the rest of the ingredients in the jar- cocoa powder, flour, salt, and chocolate chips. Screw on the top and tie on an instruction tag.

To bake the Jar Cake, stir all dry ingredients together in the jar. Add 1 egg, 3 tablespoons milk, 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, and a dash of vanilla extract. Mix until well combined. Microwave the jar uncovered on high until cake is puffed, about 1 1/2 minutes.

You can easily modify this recipe for Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free diets as well- just swap out the flour with a GF flour substitute, and the milk for a non-dairy milk like almond or coconut milk. Make sure your chocolate chips are GF and DF as well. 🙂

Here is the instruction tag you can print out on thick paper to attach to your jars for giving as gifts. Just right click on the graphic, and save to your computer. When you print it, select 9 to a page and they will print out the right size to cut apart and attach! 🙂

***One more note- make sure that when you are using Essential Oils in your recipes, or putting in your water to drink, that you are using 100% Therapeutic-grade Essential Oils that are labeled as Supplemental. You want to make sure that there are no additives or chemicals in the Essential Oils that you consume, just 100% pure oil. This is why I only trust Young Living Essential Oils, because they have the Seed to Seal Quality Commitment. Please don’t consume anything you are not sure is 100% pure! 🙂

Try DIY Tuesday: Diffusing!

I have been slacking a little on my DIY projects, I so figured today would be a great day to talk about diffusing, and some great diffuser recipes to try! Diffusing is one of the most effective ways to get the benefits of Essential Oils into your body.  Here is what Young Living says about diffusing, taken from a post on their blog (https://www.youngliving.com/blog/the-science-and-art-of-diffusing-essential-oils/):

“Our mind creates powerful connections between scent and our emotions, surroundings, and memories. Diffusing essential oils is a simple but effective way to access those connections. It can also help build new and positive memories and experiences.

Because diffusion distributes essential oil molecules into the air so effectively, it is an excellent way to maximize the beneficial properties of essential oils. There are lots of different ways to diffuse, so let’s talk about the most effective methods. It’s important to note that overheating essential oils using aroma lamps or candles can render the oils less beneficial, so we’ll focus on different cold-air diffusion methods.

Direct Inhalation

You may simply open a bottle of essential oil and inhale or put a few drops of oil on the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and then cup your hands over your nose and mouth and inhale. You can even add a few drops of oil to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water and inhale the vapor.

 Cold-Air Fan

Young Living’s Travel Fan Diffuser introduces convenience and portability to essential oil diffusion. The Travel Fan diffuses by blowing cool air through the essential oil pad, releasing beneficial essential oil molecules into the air.

Ultrasonic Diffusers

Ultrasonic diffusion combines the advantages of a humidifier, air purifier, atomizer, and aromatherapy diffuser into one by breaking a mixture of essential oils and water into millions of microparticles and dispersing them into the air.”

If you already have the Premium Starter Kit from Young Living, you own an Ultrasonic Diffuser. It might be the Home version, the Bamboo version, or the newest, Dewdrop version. Any one of these are great! They all work in the same way, just vary on amount of space they reach or length of time they will run. Now for the fun part, the recipes!

My favorite is 4 drops Stress Away with 2 or 3 drops Orange. It smells just like a Creamsicle, plus has the stress-removing properties! Bonus!

Lately I am all about the Fall scents, since 80 degrees just doesn’t feel like fall. You can put in 4-6 drops of Thieves all by itself, and that already smell like Christmas to me. If you want to have more layered, customized scents, try some of these:

Fall diffuser recipes

Other Essential Oil blends that Young Living sells that you could diffuse without even mixing would be Christmas Spirit, and Evergreen Essence! (Fresh Christmas Tree smell, anyone?)

What are some of your favorite oils to diffuse?

Thieves Oil- This Post is For Skeptics Only!

skeptics graphicSo, some of you out there might still be a little skeptical about the actual believe-ability, power, and true effectiveness of essential oils, even if you have tried them before. I have to admit, even after I first started using them and did see some results, I was still amazed when I tried a new one for a different use, and it actually worked! Lol! I know there are a lot of people who don’t believe in the power of oils at all, calling them “snake oils” or something similar. I feel really bad for them. Don’t knock it till you try it, right? Well, I personally know one in particular who has a lot of internal issues. They have seen many specialists, etc. and still don’t have things figured out. I gave them a sample of some oils and said, just try them, you might be surprised. I am pretty sure this person went home and threw those samples in a dark drawer. I mean, if you were suffering with something, wouldn’t you want to try anything to get some relief? I know I would, especially if what you were trying was completely natural and plant-based. But that’s just me. This person obviously doesn’t think like that.

Anyways, this post is for the skeptics like my friend. This post has pure photographic evidence that yes, the oils are real, and do work! I am not a doctor or scientist, but I do like some proof sometimes before I invest my time or money on something. So, I did a little experiment to showcase one of my favorite Young Living oils- Thieves. Why is it called Thieves, you may ask? Well, according to Young Living, the name comes from an old legend about four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals they used while robbing the dead and dying. When the thieves got caught, they were asked how they stayed healthy, and they divulged their secret. Thieves oil blend is crafted in the spirit of that legendary combination, and can be found in all Young Living’s Thieves products. Thieves oil’s biggest benefit is to support a healthy immune system.

What I did for my experiment is I took the bottom half of a hamburger bun. I dropped approximately 3 drops of Thieves oil at the bottom of the bun. I then put the bun in a ziploc baggie, with a damp paper towel behind the bun. I then stuck that baggie into my dark, warm pantry for about 2 weeks. Here are the photos:

Thieves experiment Hamburger bun with oil moldy bun paper towel mold

If those photos don’t tell a story, I don’t know what does. I think that the after photo from the experiment should say all it needs to about oils, Thieves in particular! I can’t make medical claims about what the oils can do, but if a hamburger bun doesn’t grow mold in the area with oils, I think you can relate that to real-life situations. 🙂

I love using the Thieves oil everywhere in my house, especially in the Thieves Cleaner that I posted about last week. This cleaner comes as a concentrate with the oil in it, all you have to do is mix it with water and clean everything! I also love the other Thieves products I have tried, such as the throat lozenges, toothpaste, and hand purifier! (find out how to make your own here).

Try DIY Tuesday: Homemade Thieves Hand Purifier

leaves graphicHappy Fall, everyone! It is the first Tuesday in October, and here in AZ that means that you can officially say it’s fall- even though it usually doesn’t feel like it!

Well, with the fall season comes those pesky bugs we all dread. Whether the kids are back in school, the weather change is throwing off your co-workers’ or family member’s immune systems, or extra traveling during the holidays, we all need an extra boost of helpfulness to support our immune systems. I, like most bug-fearing people, would never be caught without some Purell in my purse. Applied after going to the grocery store, pumping gas, before eating a quick snack, you name it, I would clean it. I have become even more cautious after having my daughter and not wanting her tiny little immune system to become compromised from a random excursion out of the house.

Recently, I have been hearing in the news how some of the yukkiest bugs have now started to become immune to these alcohol and chemical “anti-bacterial” sanitizers and soaps because we are all using them constantly. What???!!! Sometimes you just cannot get to a sink to wash your hands with good ol’ soap and water, what is a desperate mommy to do? Continue reading
